Situated by the Pacific Ocean and framed by the rugged Port Hills, Christchurch is located in an area of outstanding natural beauty. There’s plenty to do if you choose to stay in and around the city, including punting on the Avon, riding the Gondola, a trip to the Antarctic Centre or mountain biking in the hills.
 

If you want to explore further afield, visit the historic French settlement of Akaroa, soak in the thermal hot springs in Hanmer, go whale watching in Kaikoura, or head for the magnificent Southern Alps. Christchurch is a city on the up, currently undergoing a major rebuild following a series of damaging earthquakes in 2010-11. It is in the process of transforming itself into one of the world’s most modern and sustainable cities.
